The Traditional Latin Mass, also called the Tridentine Mass or the Mass in the extraordinary form is celebrated in Latin in accordance with the 1962 Roman Missal. After the Second Vatican Council with the Mass being widely celebrated in the vernacular, many of the faithful erroneously concluding that the Latin Mass was somehow prohibited. To correct this misunderstanding, the Pope instructed the faithful.
In 1988 Pope Saint John Paul, II issued an Apostolic Letter, motu proprio (i.e. on his own initiative) entitled Ecclesia Dei, reminding Bishops that the Latin Mass was both permitted and valid.
In an effort to further heal any interior divisions within the body of the Church, Pope Benedict further clarified initial misunderstandings on July 7, 2007 by issuing an Apostolic Letter entitled Summorum Pontificum. It clarified that all Priests were free to offer the Tridentine Mass and administer most of the sacraments according to the 1962 Missal, in the form used before the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council.
